The question nobody asks first

Most businesses who ask for a custom build do not need one, and most agencies sell them one anyway, because a bespoke application is a bigger invoice and a longer dependency. If WordPress does what you need, we will tell you that, and you will spend a fraction of the money.

When it genuinely is an application, it gets built as one: a real backend, real authentication, and code that upgrades rather than trapping you on the version that happened to be current when we started.

The part that is harder for others to match is what happens after launch. We also run the server it sits on. When a page is slow or an integration stops delivering, there is no argument about whether it is the code or the hosting, because it is the same team looking at both.

Design

Interface and experience design as part of the build rather than a separate purchase, so what gets designed is what gets shipped.

That list is deliberately unexciting. Every one of those is something you could hire somebody else to work on tomorrow, which is the point. A stack chosen because it is interesting to the people building it is a stack that becomes your problem the day they lose interest.

Questions

Before you commission anything

Do we need a custom build, or will WordPress do?

Ask us before you decide. If the site presents the business, publishes content and takes enquiries, WordPress does it well and cheaply. If your users log in and the thing has to hold state and rules, that is an application, and forcing it into WordPress costs more in the end.

Who owns the code?

You do, on delivery, along with the repository and the documentation. We do not hold source as leverage and we do not build on a licence that stops working when you stop paying us.

Do you host what you build?

If you want. It is usually the better answer because it puts the code and the server with the same team, but it is not a condition. We will deploy to your hosting or your cloud account just as happily.

Can you take over something somebody else started?

Often. We read what exists first and give you an honest assessment, including the case where finishing it costs more than restarting. That assessment is worth having even if you then decide not to use us.

What happens after launch?

Maintenance for the updates, security patches and small changes that every live system needs, on a package sized to the project. Bigger changes are quoted as work, not billed against a retainer that quietly runs out.

How long does it take?

A brochure site is weeks. An application is months, and the honest range depends on how much of it has to exist before anybody can use any of it. We scope that before you commit rather than after.
